This year was very exciting for both of us! Despite being busy most of the time with work and big life events, we managed to steal some time for ourselves here and there and return to our favourite hobby – reading. We even created our very own Goodreads profile, where you can track our reading progress and read our reviews!
With Christmas just around the corner and, more importantly, the Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Books of 2018, we decided to take on a different approach instead of waiting for the December 4th winner announcement. In addition to other books we’ll be sending each other in 2019, we chose our own winners from the sections which most interest us. The task was very difficult, but we managed to cut the list to the following titles:
- The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
- Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock
- The Outsider by Stephen King
- Circe by Madeline Miller
- Chamkoria by Milen Ruskov
- The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
- Dracul by Dacre Stoker
- Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
- The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
- A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny
- Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami
- If they Come for Us by Fatimah Asghar
We tried to make the list as diverse as possible, in terms of genres and authors, so we can challenge ourselves even further and expand our reading horizons. Nel’s selection includes an eclectic mix of Eastern and Western, old, and modern classics, with a spot of horror. Vel’s choices bring a couple of modern female authors and a master of the bizarre. 12 books is a tall order when postage is considered, but we will be on the lookout to sneak in a few further titles, if time allows.
We hope that 2019 will be filled with even better stories, characters and ideas. In the meantime, our new article on Rene Karabash’s Sworn Virgin will be posted on December 16th. See you then!
